This study examines the geochemical characteristics of potential source rocks in the southern part of Sari County. For this purpose, eight samples of Miocene-aged potential source rock sediments from the area were selected for Rock-Eval pyrolysis analysis. According to the results of this analysis, the studied deposits are poor in total organic carbon (TOC), with TOC values ranging from 0.15% to 0.48%. Most of the studied deposits contain immature kerogen in terms of maturity and are predominantly at the final stage of diagenesis (prior to or at the onset of the oil window). Therefore, these deposits have weak hydrocarbon-generating potential and lack any suitable kerogen for local hydrocarbon production. Additionally, organic facies analysis indicated that the sediments were deposited in a continental, fluvial environment.
